Three Chinese mobile operators granted 3G licenses

Chinese mobile operators; China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom have been granted 3G licenses by Chinese authorities.

The Ministry for Industry and Information Technology, expects the three operators to invest a total of US$41 billion in developing infrastructure for the technology. The Ministry also intends to regulate competition, data security, rates and user rights.

The largest of the operators, China Mobile has opted to run the TD-SCDMA standard that it developed in China with Siemen AG, while China Telecom will use the US CDMA 2000 system and China Unicom will use the European UMTS system.

China Mobile is hoping to sign 100 million people to its 3G service, and is already the operator of choice for three quarters of China’s population. However, the fact that the two smaller firms are running more established 3G technology may mean their data is more quickly accessed by mobile phone users which may give them the advantage they need to gain market share from the larger rival.

This is the first time Chinese operators have been given access to the 600 billion-strong 3G mobile market.
