Korean mobile phone manufacturer LG Electronics is not yet a well-known smartphone maker but that is set to change. The company has announced it will be releasing 10 new smartphones in 2009.
LG, which released three smartphones this year, said at a press conference that it expects the new smartphones to become "million sellers".
It is rumoured that at least one of the new smartphones will support Windows Mobile, and the company is also said to be considering Linux-based and Symbian smartphones. LG is already a member of Google`s Open Handset Alliance.
The cellphone manufacturer is said to have been concerned it might lose its market influence without increasing its production of smartphones.
LG says it is planning to target the low-end market. It has already been testing the market with its existing smartphones, the company says, and it is ready to roll out more devices on a global scale.
The company`s profit model is to run a single digit margin in the low-end market in 2009, and achieve the same margin as total handset sales margin by 2012.
Smartphones are expected to grow exponentially in the next couple of years, as more and more people adopt the practise of mobile emailing.
