Mobile internet popular with the young

27.11.2008

Mobile internet usage is increasing at eight times the speed of PC-based internet usage.

A study by analysts Nielsen Online revealed the statistic, along with the finding that the biggest growth area lies with young internet users. A quarter of all mobile internet users are aged between 15 and 24. This is almost a 50% increase on the number of people in the same age group who use PC-based internet.

For older people, the statistics are the other way around: 23% of PC internet users are aged 55 and over, whereas this age group represents just 12% of the mobile internet market.

Perhaps the most significant finding of the Nielsen study is that Google does not appear to have dominated mobile internet the way it has dominated PC internet. 28 million UK residents access Google on their PCs every month, whereas the figure drops to just 1.7 million for mobile internet. In fact, the most popular website for mobile internet users is BBC News, with nearly a quarter of all users visiting it at some point.

Kent Ferguson, a senior analyst with Nielsen Online, said: "This highlights the advantage of mobile when it comes to immediacy: people often need fast, instant access to weather or sports news and mobile can obviously satisfy this."
