Toshiba has officially entered the lucrative smartphone market with the TG01, a new touch-screen smartphone that is already being dubbed the "iPhone killer".
Due for a summer release in Europe, the TG01 is a super-slim smartphone with a 4.1 inch touch-screen (far bigger than the iPhone) and a Qualcomm 1Ghz processor powerful enough for graphics-rich mobile games, music and movies.
The TG01 runs on Windows Mobile 6.1, with Toshiba's own 3D GUI, GPS, Wi-Fi, HSDPA and a touchpad.
Akira Yushima, chief technology executive at Mobile Communications Company of Toshiba, said: "We had four goals for the TG01. They were to achieve an ultimate slimness that fits in a pocket, to mount a highly visible large display, to satisfy users with quick and smooth operation, and to realize an easy-to-use user interface.
"We see the TG01 as a new 'mobile Internet device'. People can no longer imagine life without the Internet. We developed the handset to propose the optimal form of using the Internet from a palm-sized device ahead of our rivals. We started the development about one and a half years ago."
