Nokia launches Mail on Ovi mobile email service

Nokia has announced it is launching a beta version of its Mail on Ovi mobile email service in twelve different languages to try to attract users in emerging markets to mobile email.

The launch is being met with excitement in the industry as the service claims to allow users of 36 different Nokia models, in emerging markets around the world, to set up a mobile email account with Ovi in minutes and access email through their handset without the need for a PC.

Nokia’s director of software and services, Tom Farrell, adds “There are many, many consumers who for the first time will join the internet on a Nokia device, and we want to give these people the opportunity to participate and join the digital economy.”

Nokia has shipped around 110 million phones that are compatible with the service, which will be available in languages including Hindi, Bengali, Bahasa, French, Spanish and English.

In addition, Nokia is developing another new service called Nokia Messaging which will also be accessible through PCs and will be available from February.

“The goal is to reach the point where email and instant messaging are as ubiquitous and easy to use as SMS is today,” says Farrell.
