Firefox Mobile due to launch April 2009

Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson phones that run on a Symbian OS will be able to benefit from a mobile version of the Firefox browser by April 2009.

Christian Sejersen, from Mozilla, said that, with Symbian-based phones now accounting for almost half of all smartphone sales, it was time to bring Firefox to the platform. Sejersen confirmed that Mozilla is working with engineers from Symbian to port the browser over.

Dubbed "Fennec", Firefox Mobile is already available for Linux Maemo and Windows Mobile devices, but only in an unfinished alpha form. Mozilla are working on a beta version for Symbian.

Sejersen's blog says that "in order for Mozilla to be relevant in the smartphone space we need to have a presence on the Symbian platform. We have worked with Symbian to understand and scope the size of the project and Symbian are supporting this with engineers to start working on this project so far."

Not many details are available just yet about what Fennec will look like on a mobile phone, and in what way the browser will differ from, say, Nokia's S60 browser or Opera Mini, but its expected that some form of tabbed browsing will be possible.
